Cortina d’Ampezzo

Skiing in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The mountain resort bears the prestigious title of Queen of the Dolomites.

It’s located at an altitude of 1210 m among the most famous Dolomite peaks.

For example the Croda da Lago, the Nuvolau, the Cinque Torri, the Tofane group, the Cristallo, the Faloria and the Sorapiss that majestically surround it.

It is characterized by a combination of art, history and nature that makes it unique and of great interest.

It is a territory with a tourist vocation, whose economy is essentially based on trade.

Tourism developed especially after the construction of roads by the Imperial Royal Government.

It finally allowed access to the area.

It was called the Long Way of the Dolomites.

Of great interest is the sacred heritage: the main church of Cortina, dedicated to Saints Philip and James, has ancient origins (founded in 1208) and was rebuilt in 700.

Madonna della Difesa

The Church dedicated to Madonna della Difesa, the Church of S. Rocco in Zuel and the Church of SS. Trinità in Maion are also worth a visit.

It also presents a museum patrimony: in the Ciàsa de ra Regoles there is the Modern Art Museum dedicated to Mario Rimoldi.

While in the Congress Center Alexander Girardi Hall you can visit the Ethnographic Museum Regole d’Ampezzo and the Paleontological Museum Rinaldo Zardini.

Great War Open Air Museum

Not to be missed is the open-air museum of the Great War that extends from the Lagazuoi.

Also Torri areas to Sasso de Stria and Forte Tre Sassi: fortifications, military positions and other artifacts that tell the tragic story of the Great War.

Winter Olympics of 1956

It is still possible to visit the structures created ad hoc for the important event, some of which are still used for important sporting events.

The ice stadium, the Olympic rinks, the skating rink and the famous trampoline in Zuel, on the outskirts of the city.

The city, whose main focus is the famous Corso Italia, is animated by restaurants, hotels, stores and historic Cooperative, which make Cortina the mountain resort par excellence.
