Plitvice<\/a><\/h2>\n

Plitvice Lakes (Plitvi\u010dka jezera) is the oldest national park in Croatia.<\/p>\n

Situated between the Mala Kapela mountain range in the west and northwest and the Li\u010dka Plje\u0161ivica in the southeast.<\/p>\n

It is administratively part of the Lika-Segna County and the Karlovac County.<\/p>\n

This area of extraordinary beauty has always attracted nature lovers, hence its establishment as the first national park in Croatia.<\/p>\n

It officially took place on April 8, 1949.<\/p>\n

The process of limestone sedimentation, responsible for the formation of tufa barriers and lakes, represents a unique value.<\/p>\n

UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/h2>\n

For this reason, the Lakes, on October 26, 1979, were inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, thus receiving international consecration.<\/p>\n

The lake complex consists of 16 lakes (jezera in Croatian) and a myriad of water mirrors, all arranged in cascades.<\/p>\n

Differing in geological substrate and hydrogeological conditions, the lake system of the park is divided into Upper Lakes (Gornja) and Lower Lakes (Donja).<\/p>\n

Slovenia Croatia and Bosnia\/Herzegovina – Lakes Croatia and Bosnia<\/h2>\n

The twelve Upper Lakes, on impermeable dolomitic rocks, name Pro\u0161\u0107ansko (jezero), Ciginovac.<\/p>\n

And Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko jezero, Malo (jezero), Vir, Galovac, Milino (jezero), Gradinsko (jezero), Burget and Kozjak.<\/p>\n

The latter (Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kalu\u0111erovac and Novakovi\u0107a Brod) lie on the permeable limestone rock of the walls of a very narrow gorge.<\/p>\n

They discharge their water, through imposing waterfalls called Sastavci, into the bed of the Korana River, which flows in the valley below.<\/p>\n
