What is a blog?

If we talk strictly about the meaning of the term blog, it comes from web-log, literally "networked diary" or "electronic diary". At the end of the 90s, blogs were mainly lists of links related to a certain topic, commented by the author, and had a certain role as precursors of search engines. In the early 2000s, this type of information sharing began to change.

Link lists were increasingly abandoned, while comments and personal opinions on a variety of topics gained more and more space. With the emergence of platforms that allowed for free blogging, anyone with a modicum of passion for writing saw an opportunity to share their thoughts, reflections, and experiences, expressed in the form of posts or articles. AdSense And soon Google intervened with the birth of AdSense, which allowed those who had a blog to earn through advertisements.

Blog page

If we talk strictly about the meaning of the term blog, it comes from web-log, literally "networked diary" or "electronic diary". At the end of the 90s, blogs were mainly lists of links related to a certain topic, commented by the author, and had a certain role as precursors of search engines.

The prospect of gain favored the development of countless blogs of any topic and type of content. If on the one hand, however, sprouted like mushrooms blogs of poor quality, were born in those years also very important blogs, such as those linked to major newspapers. After surviving the advent of social networks, which for a moment made us fear the decline of the blog in favor of Twitter-style mini-posts, we can say that today the blog has taken on a precise identity, with defined technical and stylistic characteristics of a Blog page

And its growth has meant that creating and managing a blog has now become a real full-time job. What is a blog today To define the modern blog, we have observed certain characteristics that have been consolidated over time and are now part of all blogs (or almost) on the web. These are both structural and stylistic elements. This applies both to websites that have a Blog section within them, and to sites that start as simple blogs. Navigation structure of a blog To define a blog in the most current sense of the term, we can start first of all from the navigation structure and orientation within it. First, like any other site, a blog must have a menu.

Blog page

This usually contains a link to the "About" page, which talks about you or your staff. If you offer services, add a section devoted to them in the menu, and to any sections of particular interest. Finally, don't forget the page from which to contact you. But the particularity of the blog is that its contents, that is the articles, are divided according to certain categories.

A menu item could indicate precisely the categories of your posts. Being a very important element, I also dedicated some lessons specifically to explain the use of categories in our WordPress video course. Check out our online courses for more information. In order to define a website as a blog, there must certainly be categories, but there must also be other types of content classification, such as tags and date, that make it easy to track down text that interests the reader.

So, we can define a blog as a site that organizes contents according to: category: the generic topic the post is about; tag: the more detailed topic the post is about; date: the publication date, or at least the month and the year.

Blog page category

For example, we can have a post titled "The best restaurants in Rome open late" that has "Restaurants" as its category, and therefore the most generic topic. Its tags can be "Rome", "best restaurants", or even "nightlife", which are more precise topics. If a reader wanted to find this article by topic, they could search by tags and by categories. Often, however, it can be useful to find articles according to the period in which they were published, and for this reason in blogs often appears a section "Archive" in which the articles are divided by month. The possibility to search by category, tag or date can be provided in the menu, as we saw above, but also in the sidebar or footer. Therefore, a site within which it is possible to search for content by category, tag and date can be called a blog.

Page structure The post page contains elements that should never be missing. It is divided into well-defined sections, which help the reader to orient themselves. In the header you will find the title and logo of the site and the menu. At the side of the page can appear a sidebar and at the bottom we will find the footer.

These elements are typical of practically any website. But to define a blog will be necessary above all that there is a main section with the post and comments. Under the title may appear the date of publication, a subtitle, which summarizes the topic
